The bilingual menu, featuring enticing photographs, ensures that every guest can explore a world of culinary delights with ease.

  • Chili Crab: A must-try, this signature dish highlights the Canadian Dungeness crab swimming in a sumptuous chili sauce. Guests rave about how every morsel is a harmonious blend of spice and sweetness that begs to be mopped up with mantou (buns).
  • Chinese Spinach with Tri Egg: This dish is a delightful medley of tender Asian spinach, salted egg yolk, regular egg, and century egg, presented beautifully for both your eyes and palate.
  • Mee Goreng: A generous portion of stir-fried noodles, infused with rich flavors, complemented by prawns, fish, and tofu—a perfect embodiment of a comforting classic.

Though the service may reflect the bustling nature typical of Chinese restaurants, it is still friendly and efficient, with staff fluent in both English and Mandarin. We had read the original story about how the they couldn't afford aSogn board back in the day, but the modern version of the restaurant is definitely upgraded. The interior is all white and light grey, with cutipol style spoons at every seat. We made a reservation online, but it was pretty empty on a Thursday night. The outdoor seats have a nice view at the esplanade location, but I wanted air conditioning inside. Servers are fluent in both English and Mandarin. The menu is also bilingual and more importantly, comes with pictures. We thought we weren't ordering that much food, but portions were generous.. - Chinese spinach with tri egg: a huge plate of tender asian spinach (doesn't have that same iron taste that American spinach has), cooked with salted egg yolk, regular egg, and thousand year old egg. It's a unique presentation and a generous portion of greens - definitely worth trying. - Mee goreng: great texture and flavor; it comes with prawns, fish, tofu. Even the small was quite large (noodles come in 3 size options). - Chili crab - by the 100 gram. The Alaskan stuff will run you a few hundred dollars (1.7 kg minimum the night we were there), so we opted for the Canadian Dungeness crab for $128. A lot of people get the white pepper crab, but I wanted the saucy stuff. The chili crab has a really tasty gravy, which I poured over everything else I was eating. You can get mantou (buns) on the side for dipping, but we already had way too much food. They have a cover charge of 10 SGD per person, plus a small fee for water, then 10% service. At 220 SGD, it wasn't cheap for 2 of us, but it was very filling, and the food was good quality.

The chilli crab was truly something special here! We got the Canadian crab and it was drenched in the chilli sauce which has bits of crab dispersed throughout it. I would recommend to get the bread to help you sop up that sauce and even a rice dish. We got a salted cod fried rice and a morning glory dish between two people. The crab is a ton of food and gluttony for the two of us but it was absolutely delicious. It was difficult to walk afterwards but well worth it! The service was nothing special - a typical fast paced Chinese restaurant with your typical old school chinese restaurant decor. Located in a very touristy central area so it's nice that there is lots to do after you finish dinner in the area.

Would have to disagree with the previous reviewer on this place. The food is always consistently good here and much more reasonably priced compared to say palm beach seafood a stone's throw away at one Fullerton. Granted service can be a bit erratic when the place is packed on weekends but it is my go to for quick dinners before and after performances at esplanade because the dishes always arrive promptly and they're often delicious. The signature homemade bean curd is the bomb - there's an extra flourish to it cos they add deepfried dried prawns which gives each bite a little umami burst of saltiness. The spinach in broth is good too with a very tasty stock. Among the other zichar staples to order are the salted fish fried rice and coffee pork ribs. And the bill won't give you sticker shock (if you don't order pricey seasonal seafood lah). I've had wonderful filling dinners here at between $25 - $40 a head. This place is a classic lah. Haven't forgotten its neighbourhood roots despite the posh setting.
